Origin of Its NameThis part of Seoul was originally called Chungsutgol which means clean water valley. This was because there was a clean pond located in the area during the Chosun Dynasty, and the part of Han River adjacent to this place was very clean.
HistoryUntil Chosen Dynasty and Japanese Colonial Era (~early 20th century), Cheongdam-dong was a part of Gyeonggi province, which currently indicates the outskirt of Seoul, the capital city of Republic of Korea. It is not until January 1st, 1963 that Cheongdam-dong was incorporated into Seoul. Amongst many districts within Seoul, Cheongdam-dong became a part of Gangnam-gu (gu refers to local government district that constitutes different regions of Seoul) from October 1st, 1973. In 1988, Cheongdam-dong was divided into two sub-regions, Cheongdam 1 dong and Cheongdam 2 dong, and remains that way until now.

Cheongdam-dong after 2000. Packed up with boutique buildings and apartments --quite the contrary to just 30 years ago.
